Yeah but each game features a unique style of gameplay, LoZ has the same story yet they get some of the greatest reviews.

exactly it was just a reference anyways saying that gameplay and story does matter and that graphics just help stabalize it.

But I am saying think about other games with poor graphics that are pretty new that are hits: example: kingdom hearts: compare that to Halo and GTA4 and its pathetic but its story gets you so hooked on it you dont care

What makes a Game is an In-depth Storyline, and Gameplay capabilities. Thats really all you need for a great game. Sure Graphics and extra's are good, but when it comes down to it, why are you playing a game, yeah to play the game and have fun. Your not just playing it for the Graphics, or the Extra's, your playing it for the game itself. Some things that I think really makes a game better is after-tasks, like after you finish the actual Storyline if theres something else to do, that way you dont beat a game in like two weeks then have nothing to do with it. I also like Leveling up games, those I like best.
But in The end all that matters is the Storyline, and the Gameplay Capabilities. = )

but the mario story is the same they just changed the gameplay Sorry for DP but... The Mario Games are not the Same. In Each game of course there is one Final Goal, and that is too Defeat Bowser, The evil Koopa king, But think about what you have to do to be able too. EX- In Mario Bros. You have to get through different Stages past multiple bosses until fianally you get to the last part with Bowser. Where as In Super Mario 64 you have to use the Star's to gain Power to unlock different doors, until eventually you get to Bowser. And the Fighting isn't the Same either, In Mario Bros. you transform and throw fireballs, or jump on enemys to defeat them. In Super Mario 64 you have to fight, or jump on, Or do multiple other things to Defeat them. I could go on and on about this but I Wont, I think I've proven that Mario Games ARE different. (I like Paper Mario...)
